Tea leaves, thieves and global trade: a history of the rising power of the City of London
London was once the most successful port in the world! Centred on the River Thames, the Romans first named the city Londinium two thousand years ago and started trading in goods from across their empire. That focus remained in the heart of the old City until the 1960s. The City still holds some of the magic of those past times.
Our adventure starts from the only surviving, active, dock in London, through the ancient City and uncovers a history of great adventurers, treacherous sea journeys and much skullduggery along the way. We’ll discover how the the infamous East India Company, founded in the 1500s as a trading company, became as powerful as any nation state. And we hear how the national drink became a focus for the Luftwaffe, and how the government recognised the importance of tea to the British victory in World War II.
Our walk through the narrow streets, alleyways and courtyards highlights the contrasting architecture of a City that has taken two thousand years to grow – from medieval churches to the quirky gleaming glass and steel structures which showcase the City’s wealth and success. Marvel at a City where we can still see remains of the Roman wall and stand in an ancient market place built over the Roman forum. And finally, we complete our journey at one of the first shopping malls in the world, still doing the same job 500 years later!
